Welcome to Southern Maryland! Located in the Mid-Atlantic region of Maryland, a short drive from Washington D.C. It is comprised of three counties, Charles County, Calvert County and the most southern county in the state St. Mary´s County. Southern Maryland is a diverse and unique destination that boasts history, culture, outdoor activities, rivers the Chesapeake Bay and fabulous seafood!
Southern Maryland´s population is approximately 329,017 as reported by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2007. It is reported as one of the fastest growing areas in Maryland. It is made up of 1,231.42 square miles, 715 square miles of it being water. You will enjoy four distinct seasons throughout the year from the beautiful colors of the autumn leaves to the fun on the water during the hot summer months.
There is an abundance of history within the borders of Southern Maryland such as the Piney Point Lighthouse located in St Mary´s County to Jefferson Patterson Park in Calvert County where the battles of St. Leonard Creek took place in the year of 1812. In 1865 John Wilkes Boothe made his escape through Charles Countyafter the shooting of Abraham Lincoln. Visitors to Southern Maryland can enjoy sites such as the homes of Dr. Samuel Mudd and Thomas Stone as well as Mt. Carmel which is the oldest Catholic convent in the United States.
The areas surrounding Southern Maryland offer the workforce many different options.Waldorf, La Plata, Prince Frederick, Dunkirk, Solomons Island, St Mary´s City and Leonardtown offer employment within the area for those who want to stay local. However, for those who don´t mind traveling a little further north, Washington DC and Northern Virginia are also viable options. There are also several military bases in close proximity including NSWC Indian Head which is located in Charles County, Andrews AFB in Prince Georges County, Patuxent River Naval Air Station in St. Mary´s County, Bolling AFB located just outside of Washington D.C. and NSWC Dahlgren, which is right across the Harry W. Nice Bridge in Virginia.
